Here Comes the King! Revelation 19:11-16

As ham sandwiches go, it was perfection. A thick slab of ham, a fresh bun, crisp lettuce and plenty of expensive, light brown, gourmet mustard. The corners of my jaw were aching in anticipation, I carried it to the picnic table in our backyard, picked it up with both hands but was stopped by my wife suddenly at my side. "Hold Johnny, (our six-week-old son), while I get my sandwich," she said.

I had him balanced between my left elbow and shoulder and was reaching again for the ham sandwich when I noticed a streak of mustard on my fingers. I love mustard. And I had no napkin. So I licked it off.

It was NOT mustard. No man ever put a baby down faster. It was the first and only time I have sprinted with my tongue protruding. With a washcloth in each hand I did the sort of routine shoeshine guys do, only I did it on my tongue.

Later my wife said, "Now you know why they call that mustard ’Poupon.’

  • Anticipation is a gift. Perhaps there is none greater. Anticipation is born of hope. Indeed it is hope's finest expression. … Stephen Peck
  • Rev 19:11-16 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in[b] blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule[c] them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
  1. The Place of the Second Coming
  • Three key passages tell us where Jesus will next step foot on earth.
  • Zech 14:4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.
  • Secondly, the place where Jesus gave His Olivet discourse about His second coming found in Matt 24-25 is the Mount of Olives.
  • Finally, when Jesus ascended to heaven the angel told His disciples
  • Acts 1:9-11  And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

           II. Who’s Coming with Him?

  • A Christian woman once told another believer that she’d taken a one way ticket to glory and she didn’t intend to come back. He replied, you sure are going to miss a lot. I’ve taken a round-trip ticket. I am not only going to meet Christ in glory, but I’m coming back with Him in power and great glory to the earth.’
  • Folks when Jesus returns to the Mount of Olives He will not be alone.
  • He’ll split the clouds riding on a white stallion. He’ll have both angels and believers with Him.
  • Zech 14:5 Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.[a]
  • Mt 25:31  “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.”
  • I Thessalonians 3:13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:7  and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels
  • Jude 1:14  It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones,
  • Rev 19:11,14  Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war….And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.
  • Just imagine what it’ll be like following the King of Kings with the mighty angels who come in flaming fire as Our God Reigns!
  • Our God Reigns

Our God is great and Glorious
We put our trust in Your Name, Jesus
Able to save and deliver us
We put our hope in Your Name, Jesus

Blessing and honor, glory and power
Unto our God forever and ever
All of the honor, all of the praise is Yours, Yours forever

Hallelujah, hallelujah, our God reigns

Our God is mighty and marvelous
We put our trust in Your Name, Jesus
Nothing to fear, You are here with us
We put our hope in Your Name, Jesus

           III. Why is Christ Coming?

  • Because He keeps His promises. Acts 1:9-11; He said he’d do it.

To defeat the Antichrist and His armies

  • I love the old Readers Digest ‘humor in uniform’ section.
  • When I lost my rifle, the Army charged me $85. That’s why in the Navy, the captain goes down with the ship.
  • My high school assignment was to ask a veteran about World War II. Since my father had served in the Philippines during the war, I chose him. After a few basic questions, I very gingerly asked, “Did you ever kill anyone?”
  • Dad got quiet. Then, in a soft voice, he said, “Probably. I was the cook.”
  • My 90-year-old dad was giving a talk at our local library about his World War II experiences. During the question-and-answer period, he was asked, “How did you know the war was over?”
  • He replied, “When they stopped shooting at me.”
  • This war is going to be over crazy fast.
  • Rev 19:19-21 “ And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence[e] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.”
  • How dumb is this army to actually turn towards Christ to fight as He comes down from heaven.
  • Nothing and no one can stand against the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Christ is coming to Regather and Restore Israel

  • In Jeremiah the prophet says that God will regather and restore the nation of Israel.  This includes physical and spiritual restoration.
  • We already are seeing a worldwide regathering of the Jews back to their homelands.
  • Physically this began in 1948. This will continue for the through the first 3 ½ years of the Tribulation.
  • During the last 3 ½ years of the tribulation Israel will be persecuted and scattered for the final time.
  • When Christ breaks through those clouds He will gather the believing Jews together and restore them as His people. This will be their spiritual regathering.
  • Matt 34:30-31 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other
  • Israel will be restored both physically and spiritually.

Christ is coming to Judge the Living

  • Dr. Ian Paisley, the fiery Irish cleric and politician was reported to have been preaching one Sunday on the End Times - and in particular on the Day of Judgement. As he reached the climax of his address he said that on the Day of Judgement “there would be wailing and gnashing of teeth". At which point an old woman put up her hand and said “Dr. Paisley, I have no teeth” Paisley replied “Madam, teeth will be provided” (Source Unknown).
  • Jesus Christ is coming back as the Judge my friends.
  • All non-Jews who have made it through the tribulation will appear before Him. This is the sheep and the goats of Matt 25:31-46
  • 25:32, 34, 41 ‘ Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.’… Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world….. “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Christ is coming to Resurrect the Dead

  • After the Second Coming one of the next events is the resurrection of OT and Tribulation believers to reign with Him.
  • Daniel 12:1-3 “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above;[a] and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”

Christ is Coming to Bind the Devil

  • After Christ defeats those armies the first thing He’ll do is bind Satan to the bottomless pit for 1000 years.
  • Imagine a life on earth with no Satan to torment.

Christ is Coming to Establish Himself as King

  • Jesus is coming back as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!!
  • Rev 19:16 ‘On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.’
  • Adrian Rogers said ‘He came the first time to die; He is coming again to raise the dead. When He came the first time, they questioned whether He was King; the next time the world will know that He is King of kings and Lord of lords. The first time He wore a crown of thorns; the next time He will be wearing a crown of glory. The first time He came in poverty; the next time He is coming in power. The first time He had an escort of angels; the next time He will come with ten thousands of His saints. The first time He came in meekness; He is coming again in majesty.’

IV.  The Pattern of His Coming

  • Jesus is coming Personally
  • He will not send someone else to represent Him, He is coming back Himself.
  • Jesus is coming Literally
  • This isn’t a myth, or a fable, Jesus is going to literally come back.
  • Jesus is coming Visibly
  • When Jesus returns he will not be disguised, it won’t be in secret or undercover.
  • Rev 1:7 ‘Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail[a] on account of him. Even so. Amen.
  • Jesus is coming Suddenly
  • This will happen swiftly and suddenly.
  • Matt 24:27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
  • Jesus is coming Dramatically
  • When Jesus comes the sky is going to be amazing. Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”
  • Jesus is coming Gloriously
  • He will return as a King, with splendor, grandeur and amazing brilliance
  • Jesus is coming Triumphantly
  • When He returns, He’s coming to take over.

  • The first time Jesus came He was mocked, persecuted, abused, finally crucified between two thieves on a Roman cross.
  • God humbled Himself to purchase a pardon for our sin
  • But the next time He comes, He’s coming in power and glory. Every creature will bow before the King of Glory. Every tongue will confess
  • The only way to be ready for His second coming is to accept Him first.
